Narrative
MADISON COUNTY, NE – One driver had to be extricated and then airlifted to a hospital following a collision Thursday evening, July 18, near north Norfolk.
The accident happened at the intersection of U.S. Highway 81 and 846th Road, near the Madison-Pierce county line, prompting a response from Madison County Deputies at about 8:30 p.m.
Witnesses told officials that a red Ford F-150 was heading westbound on US-81 when it failed to stop at 846th Road. Shortly after, the vehicle was broadsided by a gray Ford F-150 traveling southbound.
The impact caused the red Ford to roll onto its top, coming to rest in the ditch off the southwest corner of the intersection.
Emergency crews had to extricate the driver of the red pickup. The patient, a Norfolk resident, was then airlifted by Life Net in stable condition. According to evidence and statements gathered at the scene, he appeared to have been impaired at the time of the wreck.
Deputies said the driver of the gray Ford, a 17-year-old Pierce resident, admitted to drinking before driving. A field sobriety test administered to the teen showed his blood alcohol content to be 0.080, exceeding the state’s legal limit. The teen, who was also found not to have been wearing a seatbelt when the crash occurred, was taken to Norfolk’s Faith Regional for minor injuries, but has since been released.
Officials did not immediately share information regarding potential charges, but both vehicles were totaled and alcohol is being investigated as a contributing factor in the wreck.
